Most motorcycle club back patches use a center patch of roughly 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) across, with top and bottom rockers about 12 to 14 inches (30 to 36 cm) wide and 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) tall. There is no official standard: every club sets its own sizes, so the right answer is the one that fits your vest and matches what your members already wear.
This guide covers the common size ranges for each piece of a club set, how to measure a vest before you order, and how to get a full set made so every patch lines up. Legion Patches makes club patches from 25 pieces, with a free mockup and a physical sample before production.

The pieces of a club set
A typical club vest carries a back set and a few smaller front patches. Not every club uses every piece, and many have their own rules about who wears what and when.
- Top rocker: the curved bar across the top of the back, usually with the club name.
- Center patch: the club emblem or crest in the middle of the back.
- Bottom rocker: the curved bar under the center patch, often with a location, state or chapter.
- MC tab: a small patch, usually placed beside the center patch, that reads “MC”.
- Front patches: a smaller version of the club emblem, name tabs, officer tabs such as President or Road Captain, and chapter patches.
A club that uses all three back pieces is often called a “three-piece” club. Two-piece and one-piece backs are also common. How a club structures its back patch is a club decision, not a manufacturing one, and we make whichever layout you send us.
Common sizes for each piece
These are the ranges we see most often on adult vests. Use them as a starting point, then adjust to your vest and your club’s existing patches.
| Piece | Common width | Common height | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top rocker | 12 to 14 in (30 to 36 cm) | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Curve follows the top of the center patch. |
| Center patch | 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) | 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) | Round, shield or custom shape. |
| Bottom rocker | 12 to 14 in (30 to 36 cm) | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Usually the same size as the top rocker, curved the other way. |
| MC tab | About 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) | About 1.5 to 2 in (4 to 5 cm) | Small rectangle or shield. |
| Front club patch | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | A small version of the center patch. |
| Name and officer tabs | 3.5 to 4.5 in (9 to 11.5 cm) | About 1 in (2.5 cm) | Straight bars, one line of text. |
Got your sizes? Send your club artwork and we will mock up the full set, rockers and center patch together, so everything lines up on the vest.
Smaller riders, women’s vests and youth vests often go down a size: a 9 to 10 inch center patch with rockers around 11 to 12 inches wide. Big and tall vests can carry the larger end of each range.
How to measure your vest
Get the size right before you pay for 25 or more pieces. It takes five minutes.
- Lay the vest flat on a table, back side up, with no wrinkles.
- Measure the usable width across the back, from seam to seam, at the height where the top rocker will sit. Your rockers should be at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) narrower than this, so they do not run into the side seams or the armholes.
- Measure the usable height from just below the collar to about 2 inches (5 cm) above the bottom hem. Your full back set, including gaps, has to fit in this space.
- Add up the stack: top rocker height, plus center patch height, plus bottom rocker height, plus about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) of space between each piece.
- Mark it out with paper cutouts or painter’s tape before you order. This is the fastest way to see whether the set looks balanced.
Example: on a vest with 14 inches (36 cm) of usable width and 20 inches (51 cm) of usable height, a 12 inch center patch with 13 by 3.5 inch rockers stacks up to 19 inches with gaps, which fits with a little room to spare.
Example layout with measurements
This is a common three-piece layout drawn to scale: a 12 inch center patch with 13 by 3.5 inch rockers and about 0.5 inch between each piece. Want to try it on your vest? Our free printable patch size chart includes this layout plus actual-size shapes for MC tabs, name tabs and front patches.
Starting sizes by vest size
Use these as a starting point, then check against your own vest and your club’s existing patches.
| Vest | Center patch | Rockers |
|---|---|---|
| Small, women’s or youth | 9 to 10 in | 11 to 12 x 3 in |
| Standard adult | 10 to 12 in | 12 to 14 x 3 to 4 in |
| Big and tall | 12 in | 14 x 4 in |
Rocker curve, lettering and borders
- Curve: the inside curve of each rocker should follow the outside of the center patch, with an even gap all the way along. Send us your center patch size and we draw the rocker curve to match it on the mockup.
- Letter height: on a 3 to 4 inch rocker, letters are usually about 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall. Bold block or Old English style letters read best from a distance.
- Letter count: long names need either a wider rocker or smaller letters. If the name is more than about 12 characters, mock it up before choosing the size.
- Border: rockers and center patches usually have a stitched (merrowed) border in a color that matches or contrasts with the background. Every piece in the set should use the same border color.
Front of the vest
Front layouts vary more than backs, and many clubs have their own rules. A common layout is:
- A name or road name tab on the left chest.
- An officer or position tab below the name tab.
- A small club patch (3 to 4 inches) on the right chest.
- Chapter, run, memorial and event patches below or around them.
Name and officer tabs are usually 3.5 to 4.5 inches wide and about 1 inch tall. These sizes are in our instant price calculator.
Matching new patches to an existing set
If your club already has patches, matching them matters more than any size chart. New members expect their colors to look exactly like everyone else’s.
- Measure an existing patch rather than guessing. Measure the widest and tallest points, including the border.
- Send a clear, straight-on photo of the current set in daylight, next to a ruler if you can.
- List the colors you use. If you have thread or Pantone codes, include them.
- Send the lettering exactly as it should read, including spacing and any punctuation.
We mock up the full set together, so the rocker curves, borders and lettering match across every piece. You approve the mockup, then a physical sample, before we make the run.
Embroidered or woven for club patches?
For most clubs, the answer is embroidered. Raised thread and a stitched border give the classic look, and they hold up on leather and denim for years.
Woven is worth considering for small pieces: name tabs, officer tabs and anything with tiny lettering. Woven thread is finer, so small text stays sharp where embroidery can blur. Some clubs use embroidered back patches with woven front tabs.
| Piece | Usual choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Rockers and center patch | Embroidered | Bold, raised, the traditional club look. |
| Front club patch | Embroidered | Matches the back. |
| Name and officer tabs | Embroidered or woven | Woven if the lettering is very small. |
| Event and run patches | Embroidered or PVC | PVC suits gear and bags. |
Backing: sew it on
For vests, sew-on is the right choice, and it is included on every Legion Patches order. Iron-on adhesive does not bond well to leather, and on a vest worn on the road it will eventually let go. Sewing keeps every piece in place for years. Take leather vests to a leather shop if you do not have a heavy-duty machine; most will sew on a full set quickly. For more detail, see our backing options guide.
Ordering large back patches from us
The Legion Patches quote page prices patches from 2 to 5 inches instantly. Front club patches, MC tabs and name tabs fall into that range, so you can order them straight away.
Center patches and rockers are larger than 5 inches, so we quote them by hand. Send us the sizes, artwork and quantity on WhatsApp or through the contact page and we reply with a price. Every order, large or small, gets the same free digital mockup within 6 hours and a physical sample in 2 to 3 days before production. See how long custom patches take for the full timeline.
We make club colors for the club itself or with its permission. We do not reproduce another club’s patches.
Common mistakes
- Not measuring the vest. Rockers that run into the armholes or a set that hangs below the hem cannot be fixed after production.
- Ordering pieces separately. Rockers and a center patch made at different times, from different files, rarely match. Order the set together.
- Tiny lettering on rockers. Thin, small letters blur in embroidery. Keep rocker text bold and readable from a distance.
- Too many colors. A clean design with a few strong colors reads better on the road than a detailed one.
- Using iron-on on leather. It will not hold. Sew it on.
- Skipping the sample. The physical sample is where you catch a color or curve that looked fine on screen.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a motorcycle club back patch?
Most center patches are about 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) across, with rockers about 12 to 14 inches (30 to 36 cm) wide and 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) tall. There is no official standard; each club sets its own sizes.
What size is an MC tab?
Usually about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) wide and 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) tall. Match it to the tabs your club already uses.
How do I know what size rocker fits my vest?
Lay the vest flat and measure the back from seam to seam where the rocker will sit. Choose a rocker at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) narrower than that width.
Can you make a matching set of rockers and a center patch?
Yes. Send all the pieces together and we mock up the full set so colors, borders and lettering match, then make a physical sample before production.
What is the minimum order for club patches?
25 pieces per design. Patches up to 5 inches are priced instantly on our quote page; larger center patches and rockers are quoted by hand.
Is there a standard size for MC back patches?
No. There is no official standard. Most clubs use a 10 to 12 inch center patch with 12 to 14 inch rockers, but every club sets its own sizes.
How far apart should rockers and the center patch be?
About 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) is common, with the same gap above and below the center patch.
How tall should the letters on a rocker be?
On a 3 to 4 inch rocker, letters are usually about 1.5 to 2.5 inches tall, leaving room for the border.
Where does the MC tab go?
Usually beside the center patch, often to the right of it. Placement varies by club, so follow your club’s rules.
