Before you order
- Iron-on works on cotton, denim, canvas and polyester blends that can take a hot iron.
- Do not iron onto leather, nylon or waterproof fabric. Choose sew-on instead.
- PVC and UV + PVC patches can have iron-on backing too: press from the inside of the garment so the iron never touches the PVC face.
- For clothes washed often, add a few stitches around the edge after ironing.

How long iron-on patches last
On cotton, denim and canvas, a correctly pressed iron-on patch usually holds through many washes. Most last around 20 to 30 washes or more before an edge starts to lift. How long yours lasts depends mostly on three things: how well it was pressed (firm pressure, enough heat and time), the fabric, and how the garment is washed. Hot washes and hot tumble dryers soften the glue faster.
For clothes washed every week, or for anything that takes hard wear, add a few stitches around the edge after ironing. That makes the patch permanent while the glue keeps it flat and in place.
Iron-on or sew-on: when to use each
| Choose iron-on when | Choose sew-on when |
|---|---|
| You want to apply patches quickly at home | The garment is leather, nylon or waterproof |
| The fabric is cotton, denim, canvas or a cotton blend | The patch must last for years, like club vests or uniforms |
| You are applying a lot of patches, such as for a team or event | The item is washed often or takes hard wear |
| You want an option that needs no sewing skills | You may want to move the patch later |
Sew-on backing is included on every order. Iron-on adds $0.15 per patch. Compare all options in our backing options guide.
Which fabrics work with iron-on
| Works well | Use sew-on instead |
|---|---|
| Cotton, denim and canvas | Leather and suede |
| Cotton-polyester blends (lower heat) | Nylon, rain jackets and waterproof fabric |
| Twill caps and cotton bags | Foam or mesh hat fronts |
| Sweatshirts and cotton hoodies | Silk, rayon and anything marked do not iron |
Always check the care label first. If it says do not iron, choose sew-on or Velcro.
How to iron on a patch, step by step
- Set the iron to the cotton setting with the steam turned off.
- Place the patch glue side down, exactly where you want it.
- Cover it with a thin cotton cloth.
- Press down firmly for about 30 seconds without sliding the iron.
- Turn the garment inside out and press the back for another 30 seconds.
- Let it cool fully, then check the edges and press again if needed.
Wait 24 hours before the first wash and wash inside out on a cool cycle. The full guide, with fixes for lifting edges and how to remove a patch, is here: how to iron on a patch.
Which patch types come with iron-on backing
Iron-on backing is available on all five patch types. It presses on most easily with thin, flat fabric patches: embroidered, woven and sublimated. PVC and UV + PVC patches can have iron-on backing too: press from the inside of the garment, or through a thin cloth, so the iron never touches the PVC face directly.

How do I iron on a patch?
Set the iron to cotton with no steam, cover the patch with a thin cloth and press firmly for about 30 seconds. Press the back of the fabric too, then let it cool.
Do iron-on patches stay on in the wash?
They hold well on suitable fabric. Wash inside out on cool, and add a few stitches for permanent hold.
How much does iron-on backing cost?
A small charge per patch on top of the patch price. The quote page shows the exact total.
Can I iron a patch onto leather or nylon?
No. Use sew-on backing for leather, nylon and waterproof fabrics.
What is the minimum order?
25 patches per design. Price per patch drops as the quantity goes up.
Do you make custom iron-on patches in small quantities?
Yes. Custom iron-on patches start at 25 pieces per design, in embroidered, woven, sublimated, PVC or UV + PVC, with a free mockup within 6 hours.
How long do iron-on patches last in the wash?
Usually around 20 to 30 washes or more on cotton or denim when pressed correctly. Wash inside out on cool and add a few stitches for a permanent hold.
Can I sew an iron-on patch as well?
Yes. The glue does not stop a needle. Many people iron the patch on to hold it in place, then stitch around the edge so it never comes off.
